I hate to say it but Summer is over. August 23rd marks a whole year being home in Ireland and a year since I left my secure job in Boston to come home and try this whole self employed dietitian thing. Since moving home, I haven't looked back. For those who may be interested, here is what "Tracy Phelan Nutrition" has been up to over the past few months.
Luckily, Cork hosts a number of multinational companies that put employees wellness a priority. I have spent the summer working in various corporate locations delivering nutrition talks, demonstrations and workshops. I work mainly in one large corporation but spend a few days a month in other sites. Speaking in front of groups may sound like some peoples nightmare but funnily enough, I really enjoy it.
My 1 day clinic in Ballincollig is going from strength to strength. Its great to meet people on a 1:1 basis. The clinic is open to all so everyday is different in terms of conditions and nutrition goals.
The INDI website has been great source of referrals for consultancy work. I have been working with companies and agencies in reviewing nutrition documents and guidelines.
In addition to paperwork, I have been featured on Corks 96fm and Cork Examiner. You can find the links on my Facebook page.
In summer 2016, I completed the 3 day low fodmap course in the Bon secours and in Kings College, London. I found both courses really interesting and would highly recommend any dietitian to attend them both. 30-40% of patients I see have some sort of food intolerance or irritable bowel syndrome so the information provided in these courses is really useful.
Weight Management interest Group
Being involved with this group has been a great experience. The committee is comprised of a few of Irelands leading Dietitians. Its great to interact with other Dietitians and learn more about weight management services in Ireland. We are currently planning a study day in January 2017.
Overall, business is going well and I enjoy every bit of it. Im excited to get into Autumn. Im planning on starting a post graduate sports dietitian course in Ulster and have many exciting events coming up.
